Aavegotchi to Migrate Entire Ecosystem from Polygon to Base

In a strategic shift that underscores the evolving dynamics of blockchain gaming, Aavegotchi, the DeFi-enabled NFT game platform, has announced its migration from the Polygon network to Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 solution. The decision followed a decisive governance vote by the Aavegotchi DAO, with over 93% of community members in favor.

Pixelcraft Studios, the core development team behind Aavegotchi, framed the move as a key milestone in the platform’s long-term roadmap. “The Aavegotchi Gaming Console, powered by Gotchichain and Base’s infrastructure, is set to offer open-source, onchain gaming like never before,” said Coderdan, CEO of Pixelcraft Studios.

Rationale: Market and Technical Alignment

The migration comes as Polygon’s on-chain activity and total value locked (TVL) experience significant declines. Once home to nearly $10 billion in TVL during its peak in 2021, Polygon has dropped to under $740 million. In contrast, Base has seen explosive growth, with TVL rising from $430 million in early 2024 to nearly $3 billion, alongside a surge in daily active addresses.

Base offers a developer-friendly environment, faster transaction speeds, lower gas fees, and close integration with Coinbase’s exchange infrastructure—all of which appeal to Aavegotchi’s growth ambitions. As an Ethereum-aligned chain using the Optimism stack, Base also reinforces decentralization principles while ensuring scalability.

The migration will involve a full cloning and relaunch of all Aavegotchi NFTs, wearables, in-game assets, and smart contracts on Base. Existing assets on Polygon will become view-only, frozen to prevent further transfers or updates, preserving their historical state.

Smart contracts are undergoing a comprehensive audit, and the migration process is expected to complete within 4–6 weeks. All on-chain items will be re-minted on Base in a 1:1 ratio, ensuring that users retain full ownership and functionality.

Sunsetting of Geist Chain

As part of the transition, Aavegotchi will decommission its Layer 3 network, Geist, which was launched to support a more tailored gaming environment. Challenges in sustaining a separate network prompted the consolidation toward Base, where the community and developer resources can be more efficiently focused.

The Aavegotchi community has embraced the move, viewing it as a pragmatic step to stay competitive in the fast-moving world of Web3 gaming. With Coinbase-backed Base providing a robust and rapidly growing user base, Aavegotchi aims to leverage improved onboarding, liquidity, and ecosystem synergies.

The migration signals a new chapter for Aavegotchi—one built on scalability, accessibility, and deeper Ethereum alignment.
