The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has launched a new digital system for applying for Australian Financial Services (AFS) licences, marking a shift in how financial services businesses interact with the regulator. From May 5, 2025, applicants can submit licence requests through the ASIC Regulatory Portal, which now includes a redesigned eLicensing interface aimed at improving efficiency and user experience.
The new system replaces manual uploads and complex form navigation with a streamlined digital application process. ASIC stated that applicants can expect pre-filled fields, simplified document handling, and the option to select financial products and services at a more specific level. The existing eLicensing platform will continue to operate temporarily, allowing applicants to choose between the two systems during the transition.
“Shift toward becoming a more data-informed regulator”
ASIC said the launch is part of its broader RegistryConnect program, which is focused on modernizing ASIC’s registers and supporting its shift toward becoming a more data-informed regulator. Transactions to vary, cancel, and maintain AFS licences will also be added to the portal over the coming months.
While the information required from applicants remains consistent, ASIC has revised the question format and interface layout to make the licensing process more accessible. The regulator plans to update its AFS Licensing Kit and related guidance once the full set of features has been implemented in the portal.
According to ASIC, anyone seeking to apply for an AFS licence through the new system must register for access to the Regulatory Portal. A demonstration video is available for applicants to familiarize themselves with the new process.
The regulator said the eLicensing project represents a foundational milestone within RegistryConnect, and is intended to deliver more reliable and secure registry services that support Australia’s financial system.
